Monthly Discussion

The market place MasTec Ltd is playing in, is still changing shape rapidly.

We continue to add new companies to our portfolio list and drop a few to keep in sync with the rapid changes in the market. Some are listed in this newsletter. The areas of fastest change are Wireless, Ethernet, DAQ and Industrial Controllers

Our core business continues to be the same, with Instrumentation, Wireless, Micros, Comms, M2M, Gauging, Industrial Controllers and Integration projects remaining very strong product ranges.

We are finding that AC and DC Power, UPSs, Inverters, DC>DC Converters, Power Supplies, Batteries, and also Video Conversion like VGA to PAL, PAL to VGA, VGA extenders etc and KVM products continue to grow each month.

It may surprise you, but OEM part supply is now well over 50% of our sales, so if you are a machine, device or system builder, please contact us with your parts lists for quotations. Just email the list and one of sales execs will work on supply and time lines for you. We now have great experience in this area.

We can also accomodate export companies that deal in USD, Euro and AUD funds without the need to use NZD. This is agreat saving to companies, we estimate at least 5% if you stay in the currency you trade in.

Technical...Tip of the Month

DAQ Systems

Differential and Single Ended Configuration Confusion

Most DAQ systems that have configurable Differential and Single Ended input MUXs, come configured for differential mode. This is a trap for many users, as they wire up thinking they are hooking to a singled ended ground referenced systems and then discover the digitised data drifts around uncontrollably due to the spare open floating differential input. So check this. The configuration software will allow you to select either Diff or SE. So with MCC products use Instalcal to config and NI use MAX etc.

Offsets on analog inputs in DAQ System

If you are having difficulty getting full resolution out of your DAQ system because the input signals have an offset, use this little trick. It only works if you have a differential input mux and a bipolar analog output DAC and a single ended input signal. Tie the analog output to the other side of the differential inputs and null the offset off to zero using the DAC output, you will then get full resolution. If each input has a different offset, tie all the -ve diff inputs to the DAC and build an offset table in software for each channel so when each channel is selected the offset is now nulled to zero and you get full resolution.

Software Trends...Best of the Month

DasyLab

Do you remember DasyLab, the graphical programming system that sort of looks like NI's LabVIEW and MCC's Softwire but is a heap easier to use, requiring little programming skills.

This German built piece of software from MeasX, is now available in the new Version 9, released this month, with drivers and linkage for all of Measurement Computing DAQ systems including their USB DAQ systems.

Power Kinetics... Yes they are still being supplied and serviced by MasTec

BOB, US 9003 and US 9001 UPSs

We get emails from all over the world about Power Kinetics UPSs asking for sales and service.

We have had emails and supplied to some in Central America, Ireland, Europe, Australia, Philipines and USA over the years.

Here is the latest scoop on PK UPSs.

Blackout Busters are no longer made and service is limited to a very simple level, fuses, batteries, cables etc. We service about 3-4 each week in Auckland. We have stocks of cables, batteries, micropaks, and smartpaks for BOBs and about 6 Bob 10Es left in stock, all these are demo models and come with new batteries for $99 +GST. A great UPS.

US9003 UPSs (400VA Redundant modules, with 4, 6 and 12 slot chassis) are still made and available from stock. We service 9003s about once each month or so and usually it is battery replacement but we do have new controller boards and backplanes etc for these units available also. At present we have new 9003 UPS modules in stock and a new 12 slot 9003 and rebuilt 6 slot UPS on sale for an excellent price. We have sold hundreds of these UPSs into NZ over the last 7 years and few come back for service.

US9001 UPSs (1000VA Redundant modules, with 4, 6, 9 and 12 slot chassis) are still made and available from stock. We service 9001s about once each week and usually it is batteries but we do have new controller boards, backplanes, fans etc for these units available also. At present we have new and rebuilt 9001 UPS modules in stock and a used 12KVA TITO ( Three phase ) 12 slot 9001 UPS on sale for an excellent price. Also we have two 4 slot chassis, one new, one a show room model on special. We also sold hundreds of these UPSs into NZ and they are extremeley reliable.

Service Tip:--With 9001s we recommend any site that is 3 years or older to check the fans on each UPS module. To do this pull the module out of the chassis and power the module using a standard UPS or PC IEC power cable and see if both fans are running. If they are not, send it in for service, we have new fans or can lube the old ones. This is critical for reliablity.

Also if the batteries on any UPS is over three years we recommend replacement. We carry spare batteries for all PK UPSs.
