Introduction

You may have noticed over the last year or two MasTec been expanding their comms product range. This drive was started to advance us from offering traditional Asynch and Sync comms RS-232, 422, 485.

Two years later, we are now involved in wireless comms links (GSM, CDMA, 802.11, Direct RF, Blue Tooth), also CANbus, (Devicenet), Ethernet heavily (have a look at OTC), fiber products of all sorts, converters and isolators of all sorts, a complete range of instruments for copper and fiber, even little OTDRs for field work, cable extenders for USB 1 and 2 etc, also advanced KVM and KVM extender products with RS-232 extensions for touch screens in commercial and industrial use.

However even with all this work, the traditional products are still our biggest selling comms product range. These traditional products include RS-232 to RS-422/485 converters for industry, and now that laptops don't have serial ports, we sell loads of PCMCIA cards and/or USB to RS-232/422/485 converters.

This begs the question? Why? Well, it just seems that RS-232/422/485 is still the most popular low cost connection from instruments and machines. GPIB, USB are very nice and so is Ethernet but for instrument and machine makers adding RS-232/422/485 is so easy and the programming is easier and it ALWAYS works, not like USB which falls over sometimes.

New book we are recommending "LabVIEW GUI: Essential Techniques"

It describes building LabVIEW GUIs. If you think you are building good front ends this will make you super good. MasTec in 2004 will be incorporating many of the techniques in this book in project work.

Another new book we are using "LabVIEW Graphical Programming" Gary Johnson

The original LabVIEW book updated to LabVIEW 6.1. It seems that most people are at 6.1 and holding. This book is about Advanced LabVIEW programming but more than that really it focuses on specific areas and project work.

Health Tips for Feb:

Some more thoughts on perceptions:

Last month we started discussing perceptions and beliefs and how they affect our lives.

I guess if we sat down and started to write down our perceptions on life or our beliefs we would get a big list of stuff. However that list is what we consciously recognise or will admit to or own up to.

The perceptions that get in the way rather than help us are harder to know about, it seems on the surface anyway. Usually there is some fear hanging around these ones, so they hide better.

Here are some tips to get us working on shifting to a freer state, it isn't too difficult, however we may be shocked to know what we really believe or perceive at a lower level or different part of our mind.

One Way:- When ever we get upset when someone says something to us, like push our buttons, we have started some perception of life or belief running, usually being frightened in someway, so we act out some strategy again to handle it as we did the first time, maybe as a child( re-act).

The common thing to do is to blame the other person for getting us upset but in truth we got ourselves upset by attaching some emotions to the words we heard or the actions. They did nothing, we did it all in our mind. We could just choose to be neutral, or laugh at it or what ever, because we choose. However if the action seems automatic it is usually driven by some perception and emotions just kicking in without control. ( Not living deliberately)

So we just trapped a perception that is not serving us well, that was easy, we can take a note on this and watch next time to see if the same thing happens, if it does, and the emotion is large, we can start looking to see where all of this is coming from and set our selves free from that perception. (Keep watching your life, the witness mode)

Just keep ticking these perceptions off, with practice, it gets quicker, at first it is easy to wallow around and make hard work of it all. Sometimes when we discover the reason for the perception, it comes rolling up from the somewhere in the mind, we are amazed, sometimes we release loads of energy, sometimes we cry, sometime we will laugh at the release, it doesn't matter, as long as you can dance with our little devil we made, we have won and transcended it.

There is no other way forward, we can put the day off to do this, we may cause real dis--ease for ourselves, but at somepoint in time we will address these points, so there is no time like now, right now, as that is all the time we ever have.

Thank the next person that pushes your button, you actually asked them to do it for you, so you could transcend again.
