Monthly Discussion On Site LabVIEW Training In addition to our normal LabVIEW training courses, MasTec is now offering to take software engineers from other companies and putting them in house for 2-4 week periods to do a cadetship style training, with real hands on work.
These engineers will work with our engineers on our in house projects and in the process we taught good programming skills.
If the visiting engineers are not able to program already, they will be given course work to do to get them through the startup learning stages.
The reason for this new type of training, is that we notice that a some programmers are actually building programs that are not good design, structures.
If a company allows these practices to continue they will have a set of applications that cause problems long term, and will in many cases be difficult to upgrade or expand.
Our staff can teach how to program correctly, with good design, using object orientation LabVIEW techniques etc.

Company... This Month's Focus Company
Dataforth Corporation based in Tucson, AZ USA
MasTec been selling products from Datafroth since 1995....2005 CatalogWhy Build when you can buy Signal Conditioners? Why Isolate also? Do you need a Signal Conditioning Tutorial?
Dataforth is a World Leader in Signal Conditioning and is known as the Burr Brown offshoot company, that originally developed the second source for the Instrumentation Grade 5B Signal Conditioners.
Since then Datforth has gone on to specialise in many signal conditioners for analog and comms systems and high isolation DAQ and logging systems.
In Analog Systems, they make hundreds of models of signal and transducer specific conditioners in the 5B, 9B, and now the new small 8B Series and also a duplication of these conditioners as DIN Rail mount models. Also an extensvie range of 4-20mA Transmitter conditioners, loop isolators, temperature transmitters, loop powered transmitters.
In Comms Systems they make an extensive range of LIne drivers or Short Haul modem both copper and fiber. Also the highest isolation RS-232 to 485 converters 7.5KV in DIN Rail format, great for substation work with RTUs.
In DAQ they make the 14-16 bit, high isolation Analog System called Isolynx, with 1500 VRMS channel to channel isolation for high noise or difficult measurement areas. Interfacing is RS-232, 485 or Modbus

Technical...Tip of the MonthCalibration in PC Based DAQ Systems Which Way to Calibrate
After many years of building computer measurment systems, (about 37 years now), it has become clearer and clearer over the years to calibrate the complete sub sections of the measurement system all together. To do this use a software method rather than calibrate each sub section individually on the bench using a calibration test rig and then enter into the software the calibration data for each sub section.
Now to expand on that idea. Apply several known calibrate signal to a transducer or measurement system, (eg say a load cell, several known certified calibrated loads ) and then using the PC do the calibration using the DAQ system in the computer using a specific built calibration function or routine in the software. By doing this type of calibration technique, it will take in to account all the subsections gains and offset factors. From this you can develop if linear a Y=mX+b equation to correct all data received from the transducer or if non linear a polynomial equation to correct any data received.
Using this method the offsets in the transducer, signal conditioner, cabling, DAQ mux and amps and also the ADC are all linked together for the one time calibration.
For most linear systems, it is always best to do at least 3 point calibration, for non linear systems, 5-7 if possible for good polynomials.
For linear systems it is then not necessary to actually zero the signal conditioning systems and you can use a PC controlled auto zero system in software, that just reads the input at zero input and what ever the offset is, subtract that and then apply the data received through the y=mX+b formula.
This is not true for non linear systems, always zero a non linear system at the signal conditioner so the conditioners, amps DAQ etc are working in a known calibrated way.

Sold State Relays... Product of the MonthOPTO 22... Hockey Puck and PCB SSRs Both AC and DC SSRs
MasTec has been supplying OPTO 22 SSRs for about 8 years now.
We have over 100K individual SSRs running in NZ.
As you can see from the Spec Sheet there are many models, amd we stock almost all of these in depth.
All OPTO 22 SSRs are tested at 200% rating, 200% on isolation of 4000VAC, so tested to 8000VAC, load 5 amps tested to 10 amps.etc
If you are using SSRs please phone as for a comparative pricing, you will find OPTO 22 is the lowest cost in NZ and has the best specs.
Don't forget also OPTO 22 has backplanes you can populate with SSRs and also OPTO 22's AC and/or DC input signal conditioners. Put in 28-230 VAC, 14-110 VAC or many DC levels and get wither 5, 15 or 24 VDC switch level outputs.
Talk to our engineers about this.
