Monthly Discussion

The Wireless RF Market continues to expand and evolve with MasTec right in the middle of it.

This month we have added several new wireless offerings to our list, see preliminary info below.

1/ GSM SCADA Power:- GSM continues to expand with more product differentiation taking place, more sophisicated products, like a new Scada based Power GSM monitoring and reporting GSM system.

2/ BlueTooth:- continues to expand. Have a look at the new KC Wirefree modules and products. Now get a fully compliant BT 1.2 module the size of a stamp, amazing. more...

3/ CDMA/GSM Wavecom Equivalent RF Modules:-We now have evaluation kits in NZ and we would like more OEMs to start looking at this hardware. Significant cost savings are available to all OEM manufacturers.

4/ GSM, GPRS, Ethernet, Telephone Modems to Network IP:- We now have a new concept for M2M and remote device management (RDM) systems based on GSM, GPRS, Ethernet, Telephone Modems to Network IP etc. The NetBiter RDM enables engineers to network-enable devices anywhere in the world, and integrate them into the enterprise. UPS Systems

A Very Good Start

Before you connect your new UPS to the computer etc. Always Do This. Charge the UPS battery, by plugging the UPS into the AC mains and leave it charging for at least 8 hours. This will give the UPS battery an excellent start in it’s service for you.

Gently with the Batteries

After the charge, connect the computer to the UPS. Next, power up the UPS and then the computer, then turn the AC mains power off at the wall. The computer will now run off the UPS battery. Verify that everything on the computer runs correctly and then turn back on the wall AC mains. Don’t run the computer too long off the battery, always be gentle to the battery and it will be your life line when you need it. Don’t see how long the computer will run off the battery and let it run until it stops, if it runs for 5-10 minutes that should be sufficient for any shut down procedure except large servers. Battery life is determined by several factors but the biggest factor is how badly abused they are, deep discharges will shorten the life.

Software Trends...Best of the Month

Softwire - LabVIEW - DasyLab

National Instruments of Texas are now the owners of all three softwares:- DasyLab, LabVIEW and Softwire.

All three pieces of software are excellent for development, with each having a different approach to the same thing.

DasyLab from MeasX, is easy to program, less of a programming tool than Softwire and LabVIEW and more function based. However the list of functions is huge making most things possible and easily. This si great for beginners or people who don't program alot. We see it fitting in research labs, factory systems or Cal labs etc where DAQ, control, monitoring, logging and Alarming are required.

Softwire is slick, it is graphical like Dasylab but makes .NET code and runs nicely in VB. This is an excellent combination as it allows very low level coding inside VB if required, in our experience rarely though but it is there and it does mke nice code that is MS VB complinat .NET. Softwire was free, it now costs, so if you missed the free version, bad luck, you have to be quick. The cost is still very good value for a very large piece of software. The latest version is easier to install adn run, with no keys etc.

LabVIEW is still very popular, MasTec uses it regularly for small to large projects, as we know it so well. LabVIEW makes binaries from the graphical program directly and these run in a runtime environment like VB. There are no intermediate codes. If you do need lower level programming again very rare you can write a new function and link to LabVIEW. In fact you can use the NI C Development Suite to do this and it makes all the links for you.

We announced this previously but now the merger is well underway and needs a re-look.

Digi International Acquires Rabbit Semiconductor
Digi International® Inc. (Nasdaq: DGII) today announced the acquisition of Rabbit Semiconductor, Inc., formerly Z-World®, Inc., a privately held corporation and the manufacturer of the popular Rabbit® line of microprocessors and microprocessor - based core modules and Z-World single board computers. The acquisition is a merger transaction for $49 million of cash.

Rabbit products are primarily applied to endpoint devices and applications such as sensors, meters, vending machines, card readers, and scales. There are very stringent power, physical size, and software code size constraints often associated with these kinds of devices. By contrast, Digi products, including Digi’s ConnectCore™ and Digi Connect ME™ embedded modules and NetSilicon’s Net + ARM microprocessors, are typically used in integration point devices such as access control systems, alarm system controllers, HVAC controllers, industrial drives, as well as more complex endpoint devices such as kiosks, industrial printers, RFID readers, and security cameras. Requirements for these devices typically include higher data speeds, larger and more complex software, and often a graphical user interface.

"This acquisition represents one plus one equals ten," said Glen Allmendinger, President of Harbor Research, a consulting and research firm tracking the device networking and pervasive computing markets. "Customers in a wide range of industries and applications will benefit from Digi’s and Rabbit’s complementary skills, products and market reach. Rabbit provides networking solutions for endpoint devices that support many simple I/Os and sensors. Digi is the market leader in providing networking solutions for more sophisticated devices like industrial controllers and communications gateways. The combination of these two competencies provides customers a partner who can supply easy-to-integrate embedded networking solutions for both of these needs. Combining these leaders in the embedded device networking arena should lead to significant growth and value creation."

With the Rabbit acquisition, Digi now has the widest range of embedded device networking solutions in the industry. Device manufacturers can select from a menu of microprocessors, operating systems, microprocessor-based modules and single board computers, to best fit their application, volume, cost, and time to market requirements.

For our customers, this means MasTec now has the widest range of embedded device networking solutions in the industry, so do talk to us about embedding. We are selling into the market 10K+ embedded systems / year

B&B... Power over Ethernet (PoE)

Serial Server with Power-over-Ethernet

Enable legacy equipment to full LAN operation and eliminate power supply and cord clutter.

Benefits of PoE

Using PoE, power is injected by the Ethernet switch, or an Ethernet midspan device onto the Ethernet cable itself. With PoE, specially designed Ethernet devices can draw their power through the Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for separate wall transformers and power cords.

Advancing PoE

B&B Electronics has adopted PoE technology and is advancing its application by using Power-over-Ethernet to power both the ethernet serial servers and the serial device itself.

PoE innovation

Selectable power: While these units comply fully with the IEEE 802.3af standard governing PoE transmissions, there is no standard for the power to serial devices such as bar code scanners, slip printers or other devices. This creates a challenge for the system integrator, VAR, OEM and customer. To counter this, variable voltage levels are built into the serial servers, selectable by switch or the built-in web server (PESV1A only).

They can meet virtually any DC voltage requirement, with power up to 4 W.

Benefits

RJ45 10/100BaseT auto-sensing interfaces
Supports the IEEE 802.3af standard for Power-over-Ethernet
Simple plug & play operation
Single RS-232, DB9 serial interface
Adjustable output power: 47 W, selectable at 5, 9 or 12 VDC (PESV1A)
Compact size: PES1A: 3.8 x 1.7 x 0.9 in, PESV1A: 5.1 x 3.3 x 1.1 in
Specifications

LAN interface: IEEE 802.3af
10/100 Mbps auto-detecting: 10BaseT, 100BaseTX
