OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturing --- ODM = Orginal Design Manufacturing

MasTec income is now 50% Plus from OEM and ODM and the reasons are clear this is going to keep expanding, this year to 60% plus.

What is OEM and ODM? Manufacturers require Components and Sub Assemblies to manufacturer their own products. OEM is off the shelf design, public domain product where ODM is a design just for you alone, you even get your own part number and no one else can buy this product, this protects your market.

Why OEM and ODM? OEM supply is simple, the manufacturer needs product to build and usually doesn't have the skills, design ability, plant ability to make the device or the costings are all wrong if they did build their own adn so they seek low cost, in time supplier for production and remove all those auxilary costs out of their business and buy off the shelf product. ODM is slightly amplified on OEM, there are no off the shelf product and the skills etc are not in house etc, so they want a ODM product to meet their production needs.

There are companies especially set up to build specific products, we have many USA and Taiwaness ODM houses we work with. These companies will spin off an ODM Product, usually from an off the shelf product with software and hardware changes, or strip an off the shelf product down until it has the neccesary functionality to meet the production requirements for the buyer.

Over the last few years, we have started dozens of supply contracts with companies in NZ, Australia and beyond for product, saving them large amounts of money, shipping just in time and also taking the product through revisions, updates and now in many cases ROHS.

The products supplied are varied, Embedded micros, Wireless systems, custom M2M systems, Comms boards and modules, DAQ systems, Industrial PCs, Touch displays, SSRs, Power Systems etc.

Allied Vision Technology released their new high performance PIKE series Firewire 1394b cameras at the Vision Stuttgart show in Germany. The AVT PIKE camera family is equipped with an IEEE1394b-S800 interface, as well as high-quality CCD sensors ranging from 640x480 to 2048x2048 pixels in colour and monochrome. The Pike series is designed for the most demanding applications with high sensitivity and true-to-life color reproduction.

The cameras, operating in 14-bit mode, impress in almost any situation by their ability to produce highly sophisticated images. A wide selection of different resolutions between VGA and 4MPixel (VGA, 1MPixel, 1.45MPixel, 2MPixel, 4MPixel) leaves no wish unfulfilled and provides the right camera for all individual applications.

Due to its IEEE1394b interface, the PIKE provides up to 62.5MB/s, a far greater bandwidth compared to the IEEE1394a interface. Combined with a number of smart features the PIKE guarantees high performance in PC-based image processing. The integrated image pre-processing of the PIKE not only reduces demands on PC computer power, but also cuts system costs by eliminating the need for frame grabbers.

To meet the highest requirements in the industry, the PIKE comes optionally in a version with a copper daisy chain connection or 1x copper combined with 1x GOF (Fibre). This not only saves costs in multi-camera operations but also makes it possible to use up to 500 meters of fibre cable. The direct fiber technology of the PIKE in the GOF version also provides protection against electromagnetic interference in noise environments.

MasTec... High Speed Image Capture System (up to 4K frames/second)

MasTec built a multi PC based high speed image capture system using Camera Link Interfaced Silicon Imaging variable resolution 1280 CMOS 1280 x 1024 B/W cameras.

These cameras can run from slow frame rates by adjusting the clock rate on the camera

At these frame rates and resolutions the camera is running data at 60MB/sec. It is impossible to have two cameras feeding one PC as the PCI bus cannot keep up with these data rates. It is also difficult to make a disk drive system run at these speeds of 60MB/Sec so the option was taken to use a separate Pentium 4 computer with each camera and sync the two cameras off the PCI capture cards. The PCs were both given 4GB of memory and can collect data for a considerable time up to 1 minute or so at full frame rates with having to run a disk drive. Each machine was fitted with a 1Gb ethernet for transmitting the data collected to a higher performance Dual Xeon PC.
