Hello to all our Readers,
I am like you each month, I wonder what will come down the broad band and catch my eye. Well this month it is a Silicon Imaging Cinema Camera system that may peek the interest of several of our customers also.
It all started when a client emailed and asked if we could help put together a low cost cinema camera recording system for him that would record into a laptop while he flew around in his motorised glider. He has been using 16mm cameras for years but now felt he needed to move into the digital world directly.
Well it is not that simple -- you can't use a laptop directly to do this --- Most Laptops are really Legacy Technology It appears the minimum resolution for cinema is 1920 * 1080 @ 20 fps or better :-- and with a 10 or 12 bit field digitising depth, these types of cameras spit out about 80 megabytes/second, something a laptop cannot handle and certainly USB 2 cannot pipe this to a laptop. A good PCI-X desktop will handle this nicely, with more complex technology but still gasp a little.
So the technology is complex and not main line. The solution is to have some sort of compression for the data and then send it to a laptop so the disk drive can keep up. However the compression will require a computer also and some fast disk drives to take direct video feed and then do the compressing. So why use a laptop? Well the compressing computer can stay in the cinema camera rig and the laptop can be walked away with the finished movie/article for editing.
This month we highlight Silicon Imaging's new Cinema Camera System that can do this. The Blog Site... Short Technical Spec
MasTec has sold Silicon Imaging Cameras now for several years and in all sites, they have been used for high speed capture, up to 2K frames/second. SI make variable resolution CMOS Cameras that can change resolution down as frame rate goes up. In this new Cinema system they have both high res and high speed, up to 72 fps if required.

Axiomatic was high lighted last month as the product of the month.
We have since then been contacted by several companies who wanted product and these are now trialing Axiomatic products in their systems. Some companies are saying they will buy continuously Axiomatic fr their Electro-Hydraulic systems.
So if you are hydraulic systems controlled by electronic or computer systems like:-- forestry machines, earth works machines, marine systems for propolsion & steering control and many more, Axiomatic may be of great help.
Examples --
Do you have PWM outputs that need to be converted to analog proportional output voltage or current modules for managing hydraulic valves?? Think Axiomatic
Do you need rugged switches, position indicators, proportional valve controllers and the hydraulic valves?? Think Axiomatic
And much much more ...info

All MCC USB DAQ products can use this Software Tip.
Continuing on from last months discussion about using USB DAQ modules inside LabVIEW in Background Tasks.
Just in case you don't know the difference between fore and back ground tasks.
In background the DAQ unit can collect data without the computer (CPU) having to sit and wait for data, the data collection goes on in background time using a double buffer in RAM and the program can read this at will and usually at slow rates by loading large buffer loads at a time into a foreground task for processing. This method allows the computer system to collect DAQ data and do computation, watch the operator interface, service other types of I/O all at the same time. It is multi tasking but the DAQ tasks are in background.
Note :- In LabVIEW -- any foreground DAQ VIs will wait until the Data Collection is complete, locking the computer to that one VI or task, it the CPU sits, waiting for data and possibly for a long time, if the data collection is long. Background DAQ gets around all of this.
Now with USB there is no DMA, direct memory access, as there is with PCI or ISA slot DAQ cards. So this means that with USB DAQ the CPU does have to shovel the data across the cable so it is not entirely CPU free DAQ, but the main point is the background VIs allow the CPU to free itself from the background VIs or tasks and do other work and it is this feature we are using for this example.
So why are we interested. Well we have a project coming up shortly that requires many USB modules to be connected to a PC, possibly 6 to 8 modules, total I/O count is about 80+, and is mix of analog, digital and counters.
The analog inputs are in groups that are going to run at different sampling rates, some in KHZ, some hundreds HZ and others very slow just HZ, the digital in and out have to be real time live and in the foreground and all of this happening at the same time.
So we did some background investigation work to see how far you can push USB with Multiple MCC DAQ modules.
We started by using the same LabVIEW program discussed in the last month's Newsletter and with some additional code, a multi module USB background DAQ VI was built.
To test the software, we used two MCC USB-1208LS modules for analog DAQ and we were able to make each USB-1208LS run in background at full 1KHZ sample rates through one USB 1 port, using a USB 1 hub and we thought that was pretty cool.
The CPU % was about 8% which was quite good, considering all that was going on down the USB bus and the USB Driver, to make it all work cleanly. There are a few little tricks but it is quite straight forward.
Now if that wasn't enough, at the same time it was possible to run in a foreground VI or Task, the analog and digital I/O in another USB-1208LS module without hiccups. So we had three USB modules running into a hub and then into one USB port.
The MCC driver seems to be solid and some how allows all this to happen on one USB port. In our final version for the client we anticipate using a PC with 4 separate USB ports and bring the high speed data through a USB 2 port.

We are finding that many sites are still requiring ISA slots, yes it is true and with DOS or OS2 or Win 95 for old Legacy Apps. There are many opportunities out there to provide legacy systems.
MasTec has what everyone needs from iBase Inc and have sold many of these ATX boards or we have built into complete PCs.
This is a Pentium 4 grade ATX motherboard with 3 PCI and 3 ISA slots.
We can produce OEM versions for your sites that require ISA legacy situations or a mix f ISA and PCI.

For Encoders:- Quadrature to Micro DirectThe new Rabbit 4000/3000 chip have built in, a quadrature interface.... more
The Rabbit 4000 is fast, running at up to 60 MHz, with compact code and direct software support for 16-bit memory devices. Rabbit 4000 operates at 3.3 V I/O standard or can be set to 1.8 V for lower power. The Rabbit 4000 boasts 6 serial ports with IrDA, 40+ digital I/O, quadrature decoder, PWM outputs, and pulse capture and measurement capabilities. It also features a battery-backable real-time clock, glueless memory and I/O interfacing, and ultra-low power modes. 3 levels of interrupt priority allow fast response to real-time events. Its compact instruction set and high clock speeds give the Rabbit 4000 exceptionally fast math, logic, and I/O performance.
The Rabbit 4000 also offers many specialized peripherals.
Two input-capture channels each have a 16-bit counter, clocked by the output of an internal timer, that can be used to capture and measure pulses. These measurements can be extended to a variety of functions such as measuring pulse widths or for baud-rate autodetection. Two quadrature decoder channels each have two inputs, as well as an 8 or 10-bit up/down counter. Each quadrature decoder channel provides a direct interface to optical encoder units.
So now you can build encoder based systems with RS-232/485 or ethernet connections. MasTec built its first quadrature decoder system about a year ago using Rabbit 3000 systems.
If you need encoders we have quite a range with Micronor also.

1. Micronor Geared Feedback Units Replace Obsolete Geared Encoders, Resolvers,
Limit Switches and Other OEM Feedback Transducers by Thomson Micron, Eucron, etc.
Old machines were built like rocks and can run forever if spare parts are available. But as time goes buy, the manufacturer stops supporting them. Older and obsolete CNC machines used Geared Feedback Transducer Units (FBU, combinations of resolvers, encoder and/or limit switches with various gearing) which are no longer available from either the OEM or the FBU OEMs (like Thomson Micron, Eucron, Baumer, etc.).
Micronor excels at manufacturing new as well as replacement Feedback Transducers. The MICRONOR.COM website lists some of the more common configurations but everything we make is essentially custom. So bring your FBU needs to us and let us quote a new replacement. read about it
2. Micronor ESM6X-7X-8X Manual Pulse Generators replace MPGs by Nemicon, Daido, etc.Theyre called handy encoders, hand wheels, click wheels, jog wheels, MPGs and handheld pendants (we reserve the term pendants for units installed in an enclosure). We just call them manual pulse generators which is what they really do! MPGs are essentially incremental encoders with a knob and a click mechanism and output quadrature pulses (A/B) when the knobs are turned. The click mechanism provides audible and tactile feedback to the user. Typical MPG resolution is 100 pulses per revolution.
Micronor offers 3 model series with two versions each (pull-up versus line driver outputs). We stock six part numbers in all. You can download a single PDF file with all six data sheets via this link:
Here is a summary of the differences:
ESM6x and ESM8x differ only by size (60 vs. 80mm) but use 3 threaded mounting studs.
ESM7x is mid-range in size (70mm knob) with a lower panel-mount profile. Mounts via 4 threaded mounting holes (first remove the knob).
Each series is offered with either Pull-Up (ESMx0) or Line Driver (ESMx4) outputs. These units also replace pulse generators by Nemicon and Daido. If you are trying to match up a Nemicon part number to a Micronor unit, you can download a complete set of Nemicon MPG data sheets via this link:
OLM-01-2D is replaced by ESM74; OLM-01-2Z1 by ESM70
OLM-01-2AD is replaced by ESM84; OLM-01-2Z1 by ESM80
UFO-M01-2D is replaced by ESM64; UFO-M01-2Z1 by ESM60
UFO-01-2D is replaced by ESM84; UFO-01-2Z1 by ESM80For other part numbers, please contact me.
3. Micronor ESH Series and MR175 Handheld CNC and Teaching Pendants
Pendants are essentially MPGs mounted in handheld enclosures. Other control options include:
Rotary switch for axis selection
Rotary switch for resolution control
Emergency Stop (E-Stop) switch
Enable buttons (left, right or both) in either Dead Man (Off-On, popular for CNC applications) or Live Man (Off-On-Off, required for Robotic controls per UL 1740).
Push buttons for Jog, Start, Stop, etc.Our ESH series are hardwired pendants meaning that every switch connection is a dedicated wire connection broad out via a multichannel umbilical cable. These could be called dumb pendants since they have no on-board intelligence the controls are simply passive switches. All the work is done by the CNC interface and processor. To download a complete set of ESH series data sheets:
For CNC upgrades looking for a smart pendant with a PC-friendly serial interface (RS232 or RS422/RS485), check out our new MR175 Serial Pendant:
Any of these custom pendants can be purchased (with any or all options) even in quantity one with typical 2 week lead time.
4. Refurbish Micronor Feedback Units, Motor Pots, Cam Switches and Cam Timers with replacement micro-switches, potentiometers and motorsAll of the Micronor cam switch based-products are very modular in nature with easily replaceable parts. We stock the DPC-style (square shaped) potentiometers and KS25B4 microswitches in the U.S. Replacement motors can be drop-shipped within 2-3 days from our factory in Switzerland. Call us if you need replacement parts to keep your applications humming!
5. Automate manual/motorized potentiometer controls with MR265 4-20mA position feedback or MR267 4-20mA remote control optionsIf you trying to automate existing manual potentiometer controls or simple motor pot controls or even remotely control them, a motor pot unit with our new MR267 Remote Control Option offers the ability to remotely control the pot and/or cam switch programs either by:
