Using PC DAQ systems with Differential Inputs

Discussion:-

First time users of DAQ system almost always have problems setting up the differential inputs to work correctly.

Almost all PC DAQ systems, whether PCI, PCMCIA, USB boxes and other devices have a differential input mode. However they are ground reference differential inputs and this is where most people get unstuck. The differential amplifier in the DAQ systems must have a circuit where it can obtain return bias current from the differential floating source ( Thermocouple, transducer, circuit etc) referenced to its ground circuits, otherwise the differential amplifier's output will just be floating, referenced to nothing particular ( could be unknown static voltages, bias voltages etc ).

This is how the phone call to us usually goes, " Yes connected up the Diffferential signals blah blah blah and the output values off the ADC are just floating all over the place.

Here is the Fix.

Each differential input must be equipped with a bias resistor referenced to analog common, usually about 100K Ohm.

The chart below shows how to connect most single and differential input DAQ systems, including NIs NRSE DAQ amps.

Automation Warehouse... Siemens Equivalent PLCs

® S7-200, S7-300, S7-400, WinCC, SIMATIC and STEP are registered trademarks of Siemens AG

MasTec in conjunction with Automation Warehouse Australia is introducing to the New Zealand market, the very successful VIPA PLC system, Siemens PLC Equivalent product.

Programmed with the Siemens SIMATIC STEP®7 programming language or WinPLC7 from VIPA, the 100V, 200V, 300V, 400V and 500V PLC system from VIPA is up to 50% less than it’s competitor.

Boasting advanced technical features and customer benefits the VIPA CPU’s are up to 10x faster than a Siemens S7-400, come with up to 2Mb of memory and Ethernet TCP/IP onboard. The CPU’s come with MPI ports for the Siemens MPI adapter, but additionally they can be programmed with the VIPA “Green” cable which is approx NZ $118.00.

The VIPA 300V modules are part number comparable to the Siemens alternative and are interchangeable with the Siemens modules without software changes. The 300V modules from VIPA utilise the Siemens front connector so that wiring changes are not required. The DO modules are short circuit and overload protected and come with larger 1Amp and 2Amp outputs depending on type required.

The 200V modular PROFIBUS I/O system is well regarded in Australia, up to 32 modules can be used in one Profibus slave meaning a total of 1024 I/O is possible on each slave and 125 slaves in each system.

It is extremely well priced and will save you more than 50% when compared to it’s competitors.

Also available is a range of S5-115U and S5-135U Digital and analogue modules all more than 50% less than the competitor and directly swappable without software changes.

JAI Pulnix... GigE Ethernet Camera

GIGE (Gigabit Ethernet) is a standard that has been developed by a committee of machine vision industry representatives.

GigE is a flexible machine vision specific standard.

GigE is a high speed, one Gigabit version of Ethernet, the world's dominant LAN connection protocol.

It has been designed to provide greater flexibility for high performance machine vision applications.

GigE is set to offer an alternative to the IEEE 1394 standard (firewire). Firewire was developed with multimedia applications in order to transfer video and pictures from digital cameras and digital video cameras at high speeds. It was adopted as a machine vision standard because it was the only high speed connection available.

However GigE presents far more flexibility, reliability and is a machine vision specific standard.

The GigE standard will benefit the industry and users by:

* Speeding time-to-market - GigE allows for seamless inter-working between machine vision hardware and machine vision software products. This will greatly reduce the tedious, time-consuming multi-vendor integration issues that slow down the machine vision industry.

* Increasing R&D resources for customer applications - A Machine Vision standard will greatly reduce the dollars taken from innovation budgets to build interfaces to proprietary products. This results in more money for projects that bring direct results to the customer.

* Opening new applications markets - By leveraging economical, well understood commercial technology such as GigE switches, GigE network interface chips, GigE cards and standard Cat-5 copper cabling, machine vision systems are more affordable and easier to use.

Through a general-purpose GigE standard, value is added to a wide range of machine vision applications, including industrial inspection and control, medical imaging, intelligent traffic monitoring, surveillance, digital cinema and many others.

To accommodate this broad applications scope, GigE has been designed with ample room for innovation.

As you can see from the Spec Sheet there are many models, and we stock almost all of these in depth.

All OPTO 22 SSRs are tested at 200% rating, 200% on isolation of 4000VAC, so tested to 8000VAC, load 5 amps tested to 10 amps.etc

If you are using SSRs please phone as for a comparative pricing, you will find OPTO 22 is the lowest cost in NZ and has the best specs. Life time warranty on most products, you cannot do better.

Don't forget also OPTO 22 has backplanes you can populate with SSRs and also OPTO 22's AC and/or DC input signal conditioners. Put in 28-230 VAC, 14-110 VAC or many DC levels and get wither 5, 15 or 24 VDC switch level outputs.

Talk to our engineers about this.

Dataforth ---8B Series Strain Gauge Isolated Conditioners

Dataforth Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, has just introduced the latest additions to its family of SensorLex™ 8B isolated analog signal conditioners: 8B38 strain gage input modules with a choice of 3Hz or 8kHz signal bandwidth.

These modules provide excitation to strain element-based sensors, then isolate, filter, and amplify the resulting sensor output and provide high-level analog voltage output. Available models provide excitation voltage choices of 3.333V or 10.000V, allowing connection to sensors with nominal impedance from 100ohms to 10k-ohms.

Constant voltage sensor excitation is standard in 8B38 modules using a voltage source that is precisely regulated to minimize changes over time, temperature, and power supply voltage.
