Hello to all our Readers,

I do hope you have had a great time over the XMAS -- New Year break.

We went North and stayed on a piece of land in Doubtless Bay and had a great time. We even experienced Alternative Power over this time with solar panels, charging unit and some large deep discharge cells and an inverter to drive the fridge, lights, cellphone chargers etc. It worked very well. Actually I found myself each day and night measuring voltages and fluffing around it quite a bit. It was interesting watching the batteries soak up the current as the sun shined.

One thing I did find out was the fridges suck a lot of power, especially on starts. I took 4 inverters of various sizes and tried all of them and only the 1000VA model reliably got the fridge running every time. The fridge was one of these small low cost bar type units from Asia and the start current was about 6-10 times the run current, it varied.

Measuring Temperature ... With Low Cost USB DAQ Modules

You want to build a low cost temperature monitoring system using a low cost USB DAQ module.

MasTec has been doing this type of product for several years using the MCC USB-1208LS and the LabJack U12 and you can to, very easily.

We use a Semiconductor Temperature Probe we make, with an LM35 or LM34 semi conductor chip and stainless steel probe well. read more connected to the USB DAQ analog input port.

The LM series temperature chips can be powered by the USB DAQ units 5 volt supply.

This example is unsing single ended analog Inputs with a fixed gain, but if you want to do some fancy programming and wiring you can configure the DAQ units with differential inputs which have programmable gains by connecting the LM output to the +ve of the differnetial input and connect the DAQ units Analog output to the -ve of the differnetial input and supply an offset to counter offset the LM output so as to expand the range and gain to increase the accuracy and resolution considerably.

Inside the encoder are 4 light-emitting diodes opposite 4 light-receiving diodes. The tape slides through the encoder, supported by polyethylene tape guides, and the receiving diodes are alternately covered and uncovered by the perforated tape. The encoder emits two incremental 90° phase-shifted signals (A & B). A warning signal E is emitted should the tape perforations become obstructed by dirt particles or if the power supply is insufficient. The output signal can be used with any PLC or proprietary counter. Counters and PLCs have to take all edges of signals A & B into account (multiplication by 4) and must have an external reset. In order to use the high speed operation available with Meterdrive, counters and PLCs must have a counting frequency of 5kHz per channel for Z.201 encoders (1 mm resolution) and 50kHz per channel for Z.301 encoders (0,1 mm resolution).

GPIB is a live and well in NZ and Australia. MasTec is still selling heaps of GPIB controllers and cables to both countries. In fact, hundreds of cables each year.

ICS Californnia is our main supplier for GPIB cards and 488-USB Controllers and other GPIB systems.

ICS have just announced they are working to release a USB 2 version of their very popular 488-USB Controller (above) with a new 488.2 driver version 3.

A note from their President:-

The first step is proofing our new 488.2 Driver with the existing 488-USB (1.1) module. We think its a lot better than the existing version but we want to be sure we did not break anything with our new driver before we go any further.

If you have one of our 488-USB Modules or one of our 1105 USB Hub Controllers then you can download and test the beta version of this driver (488.2 Driver V3 ) with your demo programs. This will take you about an hour but we feel that getting our feedback is worth it.

The 488.2 Driver V3 has a completely new GPIB-32.DLL that handles multiple GPIB Controllers and processes. The new GPIB-32.DLL also does true asynchronous commands so it works better with LabView and VISA libraries. We switched to a standard USB Driver that is more robust and avoids the problems associated with the current USB Driver. The firmware in the 488-USB has only minor changes.

ICS is introducing a new utility called ICS Explorer with the 488.2 Driver V3. Explorer combines the initial setup, configuration and GPIBkybd functions in one program. Explorer must be run after an installation to create the default configuration file. GPIBkybd is still available as a standalone application. CBCONF32 and the old gpib.cfg file are no longer used.

Types AD300-2 and AD300-6 are extremely low noise analog-to-digital converters that can
measure 23 bits without noise. (there is a lower cost 21 bit unit also). read more

That means that the measuring stability amounts to 0.000001 V (1 µ V) at ± 5V input signal.
Conversion time is 0.4 sec. or 2.5 samples per second. Wow

In the case of AD300-2, the input multiplexer has 2 (two) differential channels with very high input impedance typ. 10 to the 11 ohms
The model AD300-6 even has 6 input channels.

All this makes AD300 converters ideal for ultra precision measuring of low frequency signals
which can be one-shot conversion or in continues mode.

A Test switch at the front panel allows the test of the AD300 converter. The zero voltage (V = 0)
and reference voltage (V = ref) is set on the input to control the function and stability of the
AD300.

Communication with PC is executed through RS232 or USB port. Both of these connectors
are with galvanic separation from the PC. USB drivers are standard drivers used for Windows.

1000 fps High Speed Camera | Camrecord 1000 ---This is handy I can see lots of uses

The Optronis CamRecord 1000 is a compact stand-alone high speed recording camera that is mobile and flexible. Its light weight and small size make it ideal for mobile applications such as fault diagnosis on productions lines or animal behavious analysis. It records internally and then allows the transfer of the high speed recordings to a desktop or laptop via a Firewire connection.

Sealevel... SEA I/O Relay Modules with non polarised isolated digital Input

SeaI/O-520 digital I/O module has a combination of high-current Form C outputs and optically isolated inputs,

The SeaI/O-520 provides eight SPDT high-current Form C relays that can directly switch up to 6A loads at 250VAC and 100VDC.

Additionally, eight non-polarized inputs can monitor 5-30VDC and provide optical isolation to protect the host computer and other sensitive equipment from voltage transients and ground loops that are common in industrial environments.

Connection to a host computer via wireless Ethernet (802.11b/g), wired Ethernet, RS-485, USB, or RS-232. Status LEDs are included to indicate communication, power, and fault conditions.

For connecting I/O, removable terminal blocks are standard, enabling fast, versatile field wiring. SeaI/O modules operate from 9-30VDC, and power can be input via terminal block or DC jack. Both table mount and DIN rail mounting options are available, and installation is made easy using Sealevel’s software configuration tools.

A variety of SeaI/O expansion modules are available offering Reed and Form C relays, optically isolated inputs, TTL interface to industry standard solid-state relay racks, A/D and D/A functionality. Multiple units of any I/O type can be easily daisy chained together using convenient pass-through connectors. This expansion capability enables a distributed network to be controlled with even a traditional point-to-point USB or RS-232 host connection. For easy software integration, application programs or 3rd party software can use Sealevel’s SeaMAX library or industry standard Modbus protocol.

The variable autotransformer (Variac is the trade name of a popular brand) is one of the most useful and efficient devices ever invented for the control of A.C. voltage and of voltage- dependent parameters such as current, power, temperature, light intensity, motor speed. etc.

It enables the A.C. input to a mains powered appliance to be easily varied from 0 to full line voltage (or greater).

Encased in heavy- duty steel housing it also features on/off switch, output- voltage meter, mains- supply lead and standard 3- pin power output.

A must for testing appliance performance under real (simulated) mains fluctuations.

An example of how to use a Variac for troubleshooting.

You have a failed device that the AC Fuse fails everytime it is powered up. Connect the failed device to a Variac with a new fuse in place and turn the variac up to .5 to 1 VAC and then using a DMM track where the current is going, it will be very obvious in most cases, then fix the failed section and increase the voltage watching the current into the device and if all is well power up to 230 VAC. Difficult to do other ways with things like Switched Mode Power Suplies.

Another device well worth having in the tool box also is an AC ohm meter scope, will discuss this next month in Tech Tips. A great help for testing Switched Mode Power Suplies.
