Hello to all our readers, now totalling about 15,000 in 28 countries.

Every now and then a Technology Hole develops --- this one is a Hardware Technology Hole.

It seems that the laptop manufacturers have got ahead of the laptop card manufacturers -- Maybe they aren't talking to one another!

The new laptops -- either do not have a card slot or they have the new ExpressCard slot -- which won't take the old style cards.

What happens now to all those laptop cards everyone owns, like WiFi, Modems, Memory, Serial, etc etc and how about those new high speed G3 Modems that were going to act as the new broadband for remote/fringe laptop users.

Well it is simple -- you can't use them any more. --- Legacy Technology

But wait-- Elan of the UK, stepped in recently and started offering USB connections for old style laptop cards using a smart USB adaptor, the U111 for the original 16 bit PCMCIA models and U132 for the 32 bit Cardbus models. pict

So now the G3 community can start broadbanding again.

We have had dozens of desparate users wanting these adaptors and we have sold out twice, the demand is so high.

However, these U111 and U132 devices do not solve everyones woes, the reason being that the solution is highly software based and if your old Cardbus or PCMCIA card was odd in some way, it just will not run in these adaptors.

Our focus for the U111 and the U132 is for the new bewilded laptop users who have the new shining model on the desk or lap --- but no slot or the wrong slot and want to do G3 now.

Measurement Computing ... LabVIEW Background DAQ

All MCC DAQ products can use this Software Tip.

This work has been tried on both USB and PCI DAQ products from MCC.

The reason for the development of this Tip, came from some work MasTec was undertaking recently where we seemingly ran into a brick wall and could not make the Background VI set in the Universal Library for LabVIEW run correctly.

We asked MCC for some help, after describing the problem and we got back from their excellent support staff the next day, two super examples of how to do it, so we cleaned one of them up and we are now offering it to you and anyone else that may need this sort of useful software technology.

Description:-

You want to collect analog data in backgound, for some reason -- in our case because we needed the CPU in foreground to do other work asynchronously with the background task. In fact we had several foreground tasks that were loosely coupled together and running on different time lines, in fact they were driven by events rather than time.

Sealevel... SEA IO Analog and Digital Combo Module

New SeaI/O Multifunction Analog and Digital Combo Module

More modules for the SeaI/O family of data acquisition devices -- with the introduction of the SeaI/O-470 multifunction module. Offering a powerful combination of analog and digital I/O, SeaI/O-470 modules are perfect for a wide variety of applications including process control, data acquisition, broadcast automation, security, and facility management.

The SeaI/O-470 provides 16 single-ended or eight differential 12-bit analog inputs, two 12-bit D/A outputs, eight optically isolated digital inputs, and eight open collector digital outputs. The module’s A/D inputs are independently software selectable for 0-5V, 0-10V, +/-5V, and +/-10V ranges and can be configured for measuring 0–20mA current loop. The A/D channels feature 5MHz bandwidth track/hold and 100ksps throughput. The module’s D/A channels are independently jumper selectable for 0-5V or 0-10V output range. Eight digital inputs are rated for 5-30VDC and provide 300V external isolation, while the SeaI/O-470’s eight open collector outputs are ideal for switching 24V devices commonly found in industrial control applications. Ordering options allow connection to a host device via Ethernet (Modbus TCP), RS-485 (Modbus RTU), USB, or RS-232. Field removable terminal blocks are standard, facilitating fast, flexible field wiring. SeaI/O modules operate from 9-30VDC, and power can be input via terminal block or DC jack. Both table mount and DIN rail mounting options are available, and installation is made easy using Sealevel’s software configuration tools.

A variety of SeaI/O expansion modules are available offering Reed and Form C relays, optically isolated inputs, TTL interface to industry standard solid-state relay racks, A/D and D/A functionality. Multiple units of any I/O type can be easily daisy chained together using convenient pass-through connectors. This expansion capability enables a distributed network to be controlled with even a traditional point-to-point USB or RS-232 host connection. For easy software integration, application programs or 3rd party software can use Sealevel’s SeaMAX library or industry standard Modbus protocol.

MasTec has been using this stacking system to build large channel count digital I/O systems for over a year now, with great success. We would recommend this product highly, for ease of integration, low power, reliability, compactness, we make systems with 400+ I/O points in a very small space and the wide range of interface options. We use LabVIEW with these module. We have done several large projects with them. The Digital I/O Isolated Input modules allow for negative and positive control due to separate common lines.

For Encoders:-Quadrature to RS-232

The US Digital AD4-B adapter provides a simple plug-in method for connecting a single-ended or differential quadrature encoder directly to an RS232 serial com port. One end of the AD4-B plugs into a standard serial port, while the other end plugs into a quadrature encoder.

A quadrature counter (LFLS7166) inside the AD4-B keeps track of encoder position, while a microprocessor provides a serial interface allowing the user to query the counter for encoder position.

A Windows library is provided to give the user simple access to AD4-B functions, and a sample program in Visual Basic provides a template for the user's custom application.

The AD4 communicates with a host computer using an eight bit binary format; binary format, while not readable as ASCII text, minimizes communication latency and makes data storage compact.
