Spot Buying and Supply
MasTec has fundamentally three sections to its operation.
OEM/ODM Supply --- Spot Buy Supply --- Integration and Programming Services
Last month we discussed OEM/ODM, this month the discussion is on Spot Buying and the next month, Integration and Programming Services
MasTec's income is about 50% from OEM/ODM and about 30% from Spot Buying. So spot buy takes up a lot of our days.
What is Spot Buying?
Spot Buying = Making a single purchase -- with no future demand for product after that.
Each day the MasTec sales staff sits at desks and gets dozens of emails and phone calls from people looking for one item or several items in one purchase cycle that they can build into a solution.
After they have made this purchase, that customer may not come back to MasTec for a year or two, to Spot Buy again.
We do have some customers that are buyers for large companies or groups of companies and they come daily to Spot Buy. These customers sometimes get special discount prices, just because of shear bulk orders over time.
Some things to be aware of when Spot Buying
We stock many common items, but if you are after a gadget that we may sell only once every two years, there may be a delivery time of anywhere from 2-3 days to sometimes 8-12 weeks.
We have a general policy that we sell Spot Buy items as close as we can to Manufacturer's country RRP plus handling.
So expect to pay for the freight from the manufacturer factory to NZ for this type of Spot Buy, also there is NZ customs costs, local freight costs and bank transfer fees, all wrapped together called handling fees.
If you can wait, we will bring your product in under a consolidated order and this reduces handling considerably.

TrippLite Surge Protection
AC surge protection is essential inside all buildings in NZ now. There is so much expensive equipment in houses and buildings, all hoping for clean AC power, but alas it is not that way, so save your gear from being done over by rogue AC.
At the MasTec office in East Tamaki Auckland, we regularly get wacked with over voltage surges and also a strange condition where there are 1-2 second AC Power Holes and then a high voltage surge after it.
The reason we know this, we have UPSs and line conditioners on every computer and they all switch on these conditions.
Above is a picture of the best surge protector available made by TrippLite.
For those who understand, here is a short note of the protection circuits in these devices.
These have a circuit breaker for overload, then MOVs (metal oxide varistors) across Phase-Neutral, Neutral-Ground and Ground-Phase. Then across the phase-neutral a high voltage cap for noise suppression.
Then after these initial circuits, they have for each pair of AC outlets, a ferrite donut inductor/choke with caps and MOVs. This circuit isolates each AC Outlet bank-pair from the other pair, in case there is noise coming out of a faulty device on the opposite outlet pair. True power protection both ways, from the mains adn from devices.
MasTec also has line conditioners that regulate the voltage of the mains to stop brown outs and over voltage.
The next line of defence after that is UPSs and we carry a large range for every application.

RCM4100 RabbitCore
Modules
The RCM4100 series is the first of the next generation core modules
to take advantage of the new Rabbit 4000 microprocessor. The Rabbit
4000 features clock speed of up to 60MHz, hardware DMA, auxiliary

The MatrikonOPC Modbus Interface provides connectivity to Modbus compliant devices such as any PLC, RTU, DCS, etc. This server connects to multiple devices using one or more protocols at the same time. Each read/write with the devices is optimized to maximize throughput.
This server has been tested with hardware from vendors such as ABB, Emerson, Honeywell, Koyo, Schneider (Modicon), Triconex, Yokogawa, and many others.
The Matrikon OPC Server for Modbus PLCs is an OPC compliant server that enables data interchange between OPC clients and Modbus compliant PLCs. Each read/write with the PLC is optimized to maximize throughput.
There are two versions available:
Plant Edition: This driver is typically used in manufacturing, batch or process plants. Communication takes place with a PLC, DCS IED, analyzer, or some other controller. These devices are often "wired" through a reliable medium such as Ethernet or serial cables.

Sealevel Systems SeaLINK+16
Has introduced three new SeaLINK Ethernet RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 connectivity serial servers, each capable of fast, reliable communications on up to 16 serial ports simultaneously.
Designed using a powerful embedded microprocessor, SeaLINK+16 products are able to communicate at data rates up to 230K bps. The RS-232 model implements all modem control signals for maximum compatibility with a variety of peripherals. For quick installation, a convenient webpage is used to select the interface mode for each serial port on the RS-422/485 and RS-232/422/485 products. Additionally, the onboard webserver provides access to common serial and network settings, timeouts, and other settings. All configuration can be done from the webpage with no need to set hardware switches or jumpers.
SeaLINK+16 products use industry standard RFC 2217 TCP/IP protocol for maximizing compatibility with the widest range of applications and devices. The included software works under a wide variety of operating systems including Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP and Linux, and the SeaLINK+16's serial ports appear as virtual COM ports to the host machine. Standard serial operating calls are transparently redirected to the SeaLINK+16, guaranteeing compatibility with legacy serial devices and enabling backward compatibility with existing software. Serial tunneling is also available, allowing two native serial devices to communicate over a network. Alternatively, raw data socket mode is supported, eliminating the need for a driver.
Housed in rugged 1U rackmount metal enclosures, SeaLINK+16 devices are suitable for variety of applications and environments. Power indicator LEDs are included on both the front and rear of the enclosure, and each of the 16 RJ45 serial connectors provide both Tx and Rx LED indicators to assist in troubleshooting. Standard operating temperature range is 0-70°C, and extended temperature (-40°C - +85°C) models are available. Prices start at $999 for the SeaLINK+16.232, part number 4161, and product is available immediately from stock. Like all Sealevel I/O products, each SeaLINK+16 is backed by a lifetime warranty.

U3 USB DAQ Features (huge value)
Flexible I/O
The first 16 I/O lines (FIO and EIO ports) on the LabJack U3 can
be individually configured as digital input, digital output, or
analog input. In addition, up to 2 of these lines can be configured
as timers, and up to 2 of these lines can be configured as counters.
The first 8 flexible I/O lines (FIO0-FIO7) appear on built-in screw terminals. The other 8 flexible I/O lines (EIO0-EIO7) are available on the DB15 connector.
Analog Inputs
The LabJack U3 has up to 16 analog inputs available on the flexible
I/O lines. Single-ended measurements can be taken of any line
compared to ground, or differential measurements can be taken
of any line to any other line.
Analog input resolution is 12-bits. The range of single-ended analog inputs is typically 0-2.4 volts, and the range of differential analog inputs is typically +/- 2.4 volts (pseudobipolar). For valid measurements, the voltage on every analog input pin, with respect to ground, must be within -0.3 to +3.6 volts.
Command/response (software timed) analog input reads typically take 0.6-4.0 ms depending on number of channels and communication configuration. Hardware timed input streaming is not supported.
Analog Outputs
The LabJack U3 has 1 or 2 analog outputs (DAC0 and DAC1) that
are available on the screw terminals. Each analog output can be
set to a voltage between 0 and 5 volts with 8-bits of resolution.
The second analog output is only available in certain configurations. In particular, if the analog inputs are using the internal 2.4 volt reference (the most accurate option), then DAC1 outputs a fixed voltage of 1.5*Vref.
The analog outputs are updated in command/response mode, with a typical update time of 0.6-4.0 ms depending on communication configuration. The analog outputs have filters with a 3 dB cutoff around 16 Hz, limiting the frequency of output waveforms to less than that.
Digital I/O
The LabJack U3 has up to 20 digital I/O channels. 16 are available
from the flexible I/O lines, and 4 dedicated digital I/O (CIO0-CIO3)
are available on the DB15 connector. Each digital line can be
individually configured as input, output-high, or output-low.
The digital I/O use 3.3 volt logic and are 5 volt tolerant.
Timers
Up to 2 flexible I/O lines can be configured as timers. The timers
are very flexible, providing options such as PWM output, pulse
timing, pulse counting, and quadrature input.
Counters
Up to 2 flexible I/O lines can be configured as 32-bit counters.
I/O Protection
All I/O lines on the U3 are protected against minor overvoltages.
The FIO lines can withstand continuous voltages of up to +/- 10
volts, while the EIO/CIO lines withstand continuous voltages of
up to +/- 6 volts.
High Channel Count
Applications
By using USB hubs, many LabJacks can be interfaced to a single
PC, providing an inexpensive solution for high channel count applications.
Optional Accessories
The CB15 is a simple screw terminal breakout for the DB15 connector,
providing convenient access to the EIO and CIO ports.
The RB12 provides a convenient interface for the U3 to industry standard digital I/O modules, allowing electricians, engineers, and other qualified individuals, to interface a LabJack with high voltages/currents. The RB12 relay board connects to the DB15 connector on the LabJack, using the 12 EIO/CIO lines to control up to 12 I/O modules. Output or input types of digital I/O modules can be used. The RB12 is designed to accept G4 series digital I/O modules from Opto22, and compatible modules from other manufacturers such as the G5 series from Grayhill. Output modules are available with voltage ratings up to 200 VDC or 280 VAC, and current ratings up to 3.5 amps.

uEye is available with a range of high quality monochrome and colour CMOS or CCD sensors in different resolutions, with global- and rolling shutter. Frame rates up to 75 f/s in full frame mode and over 100 f/s using Area of Interest (AOI) are possible. The bandwidth of the high speed USB 2.0 Interface enables multiple cameras to be acquiring and displaying on the PC or Notebook screen.
The cameras come with a sophisticated industrial housing. To ensure robust interfacing the uEye family is equipped with two connectors, a standard USB 2.0 Mini-B USB and an industrial D-SUB connector which can be fixed by screws. All the USB 2.0 pins and the digital input and output signals are available on this connector.
The uEye camera offers one digital trigger input and one digital output to control for example a strobe light. Both, the universal digital input and the digital output can switch voltages up to 24V. The signals are optically isolated and available on the D-SUB connector of the camera.
The uEye SDK offers by using Direct Draw the ability to blend flicker-free text and graphic overlay information into the live video image. There are two main products:-

PC Based Window, Door, Farcade and Wall Testing System
SWS has been developing this system since it started 12 years ago.
Over these 12 years, SWS has developed many different levels of Window Testing Systems.
The Window Testers are Telarc approved and registered.
There are several Window Testing Systems that are running in NZ , Australia and Malayasia.
Over the 12 years, all these systems have been upgraded, expanded and adanced with technology and windows advancements on average each 2-3 years, so there have been many iterations of the same product.
The test software and the hardware has evolved considerably.
The current designs are based on USB DAQ, with quite a sophisicated Measurement suite that uses LabVIEW DAQ and Control software.
PC Based Roof Testing Systems
Recent develop work over the last year has been the new Roof Testing System.
