You want to build an AC Mains Current Monitoring System using a low cost USB DAQ module.

With regard to current monitoring:
I believe it is necessary to use a terminating resistor with a current transformer or the secondary voltages can become quite high if the secondary winding is left unterminated. The output currents are usually 0 to 5 amps for whatever range input current is chosen, so if you want to measure 100 amps, get a 100 amp current transformer, and terminate the secondary with a 0.2 ohm secondary terminating resistor of 5W rating (would be best) and would give 0 to 1 V out. (or 0.02 ohm for 100mVolts )

Modbus TCP is the Ethernet variant of the Modbus protocol, which is a standard communications protocol in industrial automation systems.
The Rabbit Modbus TCP Software Module comes with all the necessary tools for you to integrate Modbus connectivity right into your Rabbit-based systems. The Modbus TCP Master and Slave, and Modbus Serial Master and Slave allows you to connect a Rabbit-based system right into an existing Modbus network with devices connected through either Ethernet or a standard serial connection.
In addition, the Modbus module supports an Ethernet-to-serial Gateway that allows you to monitor and control Modbus serial slave devices via a standard web browser.
The Modbus TCP Software uses the RCM3700 and BL2600 as an application reference, using generic libraries that are easily transferable to other Rabbit-based systems.
With the addition of the optional RabbitWeb Add-on Module (sold separately), you will be able to set-up, configure, and monitor Modbus TCP slave devices.
Many PLC’s have moved on to using Ethernet as the physical layer of their Modbus infrastructure, and the Modbus TCP software gives you the power of Rabbit connectivity!

There are three new SeaLINK Ethernet serial servers, each capable of fast, reliable communications on up to 16 serial ports simultaneously. Offering RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 connectivity, SeaLINK+16 devices are the easiest, most dependable way to connect multiple serial devices directly to an Ethernet network.
Designed using a powerful embedded microprocessor, SeaLINK+16 products are able to communicate at data rates up to 230K bps. The RS-232 model implements all modem control signals for maximum compatibility with a variety of peripherals. For quick installation, a convenient webpage is used to select the interface mode for each serial port on the RS-422/485 and RS-232/422/485 products. Additionally, the onboard webserver provides access to common serial and network settings, timeouts, and other settings. All configuration can be done from the webpage with no need to set hardware switches or jumpers.
SeaLINK+16 products use industry standard RFC 2217 TCP/IP protocol for maximizing compatibility with the widest range of applications and devices. The included software works under a wide variety of operating systems including Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP and Linux, and the SeaLINK+16's serial ports appear as virtual COM ports to the host machine. Standard serial operating calls are transparently redirected to the SeaLINK+16, guaranteeing compatibility with legacy serial devices and enabling backward compatibility with existing software. Serial tunneling is also available, allowing two native serial devices to communicate over a network. Alternatively, raw data socket mode is supported, eliminating the need for a driver.
Housed in rugged 1U rackmount metal enclosures, SeaLINK+16 devices are suitable for variety of applications and environments. Power indicator LEDs are included on both the front and rear of the enclosure, and each of the 16 RJ45 serial connectors provide both Tx and Rx LED indicators to assist in troubleshooting. Standard operating temperature range is 0-70°C, and extended temperature (-40°C - +85°C) models are available.

JAI PULNiX's newest dual-tap AccuPiXEL offering, the TM-6740GE machine vision camera boasts up to 200 frames per second at full resolution, and partial scan and binning modes for up to 3205 frames per second. This 1/3" VGA-format progressive scan camera is based on the state-of-the-art Kodak KAI-0340 CCD imager. The camera's 640(H) x 480(V) resolution imager has 7.4 um square pixels for high sensitivity. It also features both analog and gigabit Ethernet output that is 8-bit or 10-bit software selectable. The TM-6740GE features full asynchronous reset with electronic shutter up to 1/64,000 sec or pulse-width exposure control, which allows triggered image capture and processing. The TM-6740GE connects directly to standard Intel Gigabit Ethernet devices including Network cards, Routers etc.
The TM-6740GE's integrated Application Programming Interface (API) and Graphial User Interface (GUI) application software allow the user to be up and running in minutes. The GUI gives the user control of all camera settings and acquisition modes, including gain, A/D reference, partial scan, and binning. Changes in the camera's acquisition modes trigger automatic updates to the API for easy image acquisition. CPU usage is only a few percent, thanks to the TCP/IP offload engine.
All of this high performance is available in a miniature 50.8 x 50.8 x 85.1 mm housing.
Other features include automatic dual-channel compensation, and a built-in pattern generator.
This camera is available in a monochrome format (TM-6740GE) or with a Bayer colour CFA sensor (TMC-6740GE).
Applications for the TM-6740GE/TMC-6740GE include machine vision, medical imaging, intelligent transportation systems, high-definition graphics, gauging, character recognition, robotics, surveillance, bio-mechanics sports analysis and many more.

We have been selling ADAM modules at MasTec now for about 8 years now and we are still using them in projects regularly. Recently, I connected a Mitsubishi variable speed drive to my PC using an ADAM module to allow me to control it.
MasTec supplies all three companies who make ADAM style RS-485 modules. Advantech call theirs ADAM, Adlink call theirs NuDAM and Topscc call theirs Expert, but they are basically the same and are interchangeable DAQ and Controller building blocks.

The variable autotransformer (Variac is the trade name of a popular brand) is one of the most useful and efficient devices ever invented for the control of A.C. voltage and of voltage- dependent parameters such as current, power, temperature, light intensity, motor speed. etc.
It enables the A.C. input to a mains powered appliance to be easily varied from 0 to full line voltage (or greater).
Encased in heavy- duty steel housing it also features on/off switch, output- voltage meter, mains- supply lead and standard 3- pin power output.
A must for testing appliance performance under real (simulated) mains fluctuations.
An example of how to use a Variac for troubleshooting.
You have a failed device that the AC Fuse fails everytime it is powered up. Connect the failed device to a Variac with a new fuse in place and turn the variac up to .5 to 1 VAC and then using a DMM track where the current is going, it will be very obvious in most cases, then fix the failed section and increase the voltage watching the current into the device and if all is well power up to 230 VAC. Difficult to do other ways with things like Switched Mode Power Suplies.
Another device well worth having in the tool box also is an AC ohm meter scope, will discuss this next month in Tech Tips. A great help for testing Switched Mode Power Suplies.

SWS has been developing this system since it started 12 years ago.
Over these 12 years, SWS has developed many different levels of Window Testing Systems.
The Window Testers are Telarc approved and registered.
There are several Window Testing Systems that are running in NZ , Australia and Malayasia.
Over the 12 years, all these systems have been upgraded, expanded and adanced with technology and windows advancements on average each 2-3 years, so there have been many iterations of the same product.
The test software and the hardware has evolved considerably.
The current designs are based on USB DAQ, with quite a sophisicated Measurement suite that uses LabVIEW DAQ and Control software.
New versions include direct PC control of variable speed drives for the fans. Using buttons on the PC screen adn the mouse accurate speeds can be set for each stage in the tests.
PC Based Roof Testing Systems
Recent develop work over the last year has been the new Roof Testing System.
This version include direct PC control of variable speed drives for the fans. Using buttons on the PC screen adn the mouse accurate speeds can be set for each stage in the tests.
Also the cyclic test has a PID controlled variable speed drive algorithm for managing the cyclic pressure testing of the roof safely.
