Power Bank ... Low Cost UPSs --- 500VA to 3000VA

Intelligent

Titan

MasTec has entered into a new distribution agreement with Power Bank in Taiwan for their UPS range.

Power Bank make some of the most modern of the small UPSs available to day, some models with torroidal transformers, for quiet, cooler and more efficient operation.

We expect to start distributing in NZ in late November to early December.

The pricing for these modern designs UPSs is excellent, setting new price break points for Dealers and End Users. We expect to see the lower power UPSs sell for less than $99 RRP in NZ.

MasTec now has a unified product range of tough, mature, low cost line interactive UPSs from 500 VA to 3000VA, with hard to beat prices. In fact we will meet and/or beat any comparable UPS in NZ right now.

Let us know on this we like the challenge.

A good portion of this newsletter is being devoted to Power Bank this month.

Monthly Discussion

UPSs -- Where UPSs are going

Hello to all our Readers,

UPSs continue to change and mature as products.

Well this month it is Power Bank we are going to discuss, a Taiwanese Power manufacturer.

Power Bank is an OEM and ODM manufacturers for many large UPS manufacturing companies who are having a hard time designing and building the right product at the right price. This is where UPS manufacturing is going, to a central build adn design house with good product and they badge for the world.

Power Bank make UPSs for these UPS companies world wide :-- Power Kinetic from Malaysia, Soltec from Taiwan, Gamatronic from Israel, Tecnoware from Italy, Salicru from Spain, SVEN from Russia, LEMEL & Dcom from Thailand and Grupopc from Mexico, N-Power from Russia etc all badged and they get OEM or ODM supply from Power Bank. These are quality companies that are happy with Power Banks ability and prices. This is important information. Power Bank will also uses designs from these companies and this added expert input, making the UPSs better.

MasTec could have had the Power Banks badged with our own brand name but decided to stay with the original manufacturers name.

However even more important is this information. This is demanded by the world wide buying pool.

ISO 9001 2000                 Power Bank is an ISO Factory
CE                                  Power Bank product is CE Certified
FCC                                Power Bank meets Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Standards
BSMI tested                    Taiwan's Test code
VCCI tested                     Japanese Emission
LVD tested                      Low Voltage Directive part of CE Code
RoHs Compliance            The new lead free manufacturing system.

Power Bank get all this testing done because they supply world wide and CE, LVD BSMI cover one test method where one test standard is weak. CE is weak in certain areas but the other tests pick this weakness up if present. So it seems that Power Bank have done their homework well.

Power Bank ... UPS Systems

MasTec introduced low cost UPSs into NZ and Australia back in 1993 with TrippLite, then for small UPSs, moved to PK Black Out Busters in 1997/8. Since 1993, we have sold about 30K UPSs.

Power Bank is now in our UPS stable, as our low cost line interactive supplier, with Soltec (on-line and very large) , TrippLite (specialty), Alpha (general mid range) and several others.

So why add a new manufacturer to this list of suppliers. Well, we have been looking for some time for a replacement for the PK Blackout Buster, something small, something pretty, and something easy to use, and low priced and innovative.

Power Bank make exactly that, MasTec will stock Intelligent and Titan models. The Very Smart and Colour Smart will be brought in on special orders.

Intelligent          500 and 700 VA

Titan                 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 VA

We are planning on making the Intelligent Model UPS as the defacto little UPS in NZ in 2007 --- as the replacement for the PK Blackout Buster..

The Power Bank "Intelligent" UPSs have some nice options and features.

Feature:

  • Microprocessor Inside
  • True RS-232 or USB Interface select your interface option
  • There is a lower cost model option with no interface for industrial usage or audio visual systems
  • Cold Start Function
  • Auto Detecting Frequency
  • Built-In AVR for Wider Input Range
  • 110 and 230 VAC UPSs
  • Internet Line Protection
  • Surge Protection and Power Surge Guard
  • Easy Swappable Battery Function
  • Add to this excellent Software that is bundled with each UPS and you have an easy product to sell or buy.
  • 2 year warranty on product
  • 1 year on battery
  • 4.5 to 5 Kgs depending on model, so low cost courier charges.

Technical...Tip of the Month

Measuring Mains AC Voltages and Current ... With Low Voltage DAQ Modules

You want to build an AC Mains Voltage Monitoring System using a low cost USB DAQ module.

And you are scared to build a voltage divider to make the 230 VAC low enough for the DAQ unit.

Well, another way to go, is to use a low cost transformer.

I find a simple 6.3 VAC mains transformer suitable as the voltage divider and safety isolator. At 230 VAC they put out +/- 8.9 VAC pk/pk. Even at 255 VAC they are under the +/- 10 V pk-pk for the DAQ unit.

If you do gets mains that goes over 255VAC, Australia does often as their base voltage is 240 VAC, not 230 VAC, as it is in NZ. Just choose a 5VAC transformer or switch the DAQ unit range to +/-20 VAC and use a 12 VAC transformer, even at 270 VAC you will be less than the +/- 20 range.

The transformer is wired up so as to feed a single ended +/- 10 VDC input range channel on the DAQ unit. Use a LabJack or MCC 1208 etc. and you can make a very low cost voltmeter.

With a little extra software you can make a Harmonics Analyser etc. These small transformers are quite flat up to about 10KHZ, even up to 20KHZ, they are very similar in size and construction to Audio transformers used to drive speakers in tube radios years ago. If you want to you can calibrate the transformer and apply a simple polynomial correction when you run the DAQ system.

Now for current, use a current transformer that will give out the correct voltage and if they don't use a transformer again to step down. A little software and you have an excellent current monitor also.

Hope that is useful. The main advantage is the safety, with great isolation, it allows you to use a single ended DAQ unit safely with out a whole heap of questions about have you got phase and neutral right etc.

Lighting... LED Systems Main Method Now

LED Lighting is now the dominant technology for illumination in machine vision applications. The reasons for this are very compelling. The advantages over older technologies such as high frequency fluorescent and fibre optic include:

    • Small physical size
    • Very safe - low voltage, low power, solid state
    • No glass, so suitable for the food industry
    • Very stable output
    • Fast pulsing

The range of LED Lighting modules and techniques and the number of manufacturers is now huge, so that there is a solution for almost all applications.

Distributed Control I/O Modules... Product of the Month

OPTO 22 -- SNAP modules 4 times I/O density & 1/3 cost in each Module

Here’s the first of many new high-density versions of SNAP I/O coming out soon. We’re excited to announce
the immediate availability of the SNAP-AITM-8, a new thermocouple and millivolt input module that’s sure to capture your interest.

OPTO 22 are already experiencing success with this new module at Chevron’s test laboratory in Richmond, CA. The customer and the integrator have both attested to the significant savings in panel space and much lower capital costs of the control equipment. See our recent blog posting on the Opto 22 website for more information, and check out the July 2006 issue of Control magazine for a full-page exclusive.

The new Opto 22 SNAP-AITM-8 thermocouple input module quadruples the I/O density of standard SNAP
thermocouple modules and lowers the list cost per point by approximately 33%.

The SNAP-AITM-8 accepts up to eight channels of temperature or millivolt input from a variety of standard thermocouples (B, C, D, E, G, J, K, N, R, S, or T) or ±75, ±50, or ±25 millivolt devices.

The SNAP-AITM-8 thermocouple/millivolt module is available immediately, with ioProject software and firmware support expected in the fourth quarter.
