This month we will discuss Mesh Radio and where it is being used and the potential; for you, our clients, to add this to your products for very very low cost. Without ZigBee or DigiMesh mesh interfaces, it is going to be hard to sell products soon, it is the new USB or Serial with no wires.

Digi International has just announced the release of the DigiMesh networking protocol, coming soon for the XTend long-range products and the XBee® product family.
DigiMesh uses a peer-to-peer structure to enable sleeping routers and more efficient routing of data over dense and complex mesh networks.
Available exclusively from Digi International, DigiMesh is portable to a variety of products running on 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz with ranges up to 40 miles (64 km), including XBee, XTend, and other soon-to-be-released products.
So why DigiMesh, and what is missing with the current ZigBee Mesh methods?
The ZigBee Protocol defines three types of nodes: Coordinators, Routers and End Device, with a requirement of one Coordinator per network. While all nodes can send and receive data, there are differences in the specific roles they play.
DigiMesh has only one node type. As a homogenous network, all nodes can route data and are interchangeable. There are no parent-child relationships. All can be configured as low-power / battery powered devices.
So Digi Mesh can be used not only with ZigBee short distance type devices but also with any RF system, like the Digi Long Distance RF system called Xtend, with up to 40Km hops. This enables extensive range of multinode wireless systems.
Both systems- ZigBee and Digi Mesh have special operations areas.
ZigBee is an open standard, it offers the potential for interoperability with devices made by different vendors. This provides the ability to have over-the-air firmware updates. Furthermore, ZigBee offers established profiles for common applications such as energy management and lighting controls. A good selection of diagnostic support tools, like RF packet sniffers, is also available.
DigiMesh, as a proprietary protocol, allows for tighter control of code space and therefore more room for growth in features. DigiMesh is available on platforms with longer range and more RF data rate options. Frame payload is generally larger, which can improve throughput for applications that send larger data blocks. Additionally, DigiMesh uses a simplified addressing method, which improves network setup and trouble shooting.One of the significant advantages of Digi Mesh is the abilitiy for all nodes to sleep, unlike Zigbee where only end nodes can sleep. This is important for battery powered systems and can make some systems possible especially in DiN systems ( Drop in Networks ) where AC power or Cable network is not available but a node is required in that location.

The cost of building in Zigbee Mesh radio into your products is very low. MasTec is selling ZigBee modules both standard and Pro versions as small RF Core Modules for plugging directly into your own PCB designs. Cost are typically <$35 NZD and the PRO <$60 NZD. This adds links out at 250KBaud
