Hello to all our Readers,

I hope you are all fine and enjoying the year so far. MasTec is very busy.

Now that March 31st has passed, we can report that we had a 15%+ increase in business over the previous year, the real results is 20%+ with currency correction. So thank you to our many customers for working with us in 2008.

We are bring in more interesting products and types of technology for 2008 as needs evolve.

This May newsletter's focus is on Interconnectivity - Networking, Wireless and Comms etc

Interconnectivity in IT, Industrial, Infrastructure, Medical and the large Remote World, use standard methods that have evolved and developed over many years. New methods are coming on stream thick and fast, especially wireless.

Some good example of new wireless technology is Zigbee Mesh Radio, now commercially available at low costs. (Qty100<$35NZ). Also Mesh Long Distance RF systems for interconnecting a large neigbourhood opens all sorts of large site managment possibilities.

Digi our main partner is a larger supplier of Network, Wireless and Comms products. Digi

Here is a linked list of our companies involved in these Interconnectivity technologies:-

All these products require good power strategies also and we would recommend at minimum a good quality surge bar or DIN surge protector for the AC Circuit and preferrably this with a UPS for continuous running through power disturbances.

I recently had a UPS returned that had been hit by lighning and it had stopped the high voltage at the UPS AC entry point. Replacing the front end and the UPS was good again but best of all the Server down stream from the UPS, was intact with data still available on re-power. So do consider your investments and protect them, the cost is very low.

Last month we promised to introduce new alternative power products -- See the new Solar & Wind category

Next month we will look at Instrument manufacturers, we have a large array of new companies.

Smartworks has just installed its latest Integrated Window Testing System in a plant in the North Island.

Photos soon in the SWS page.

This is the most advanced system built so far; -- a 19" rack mount chassis with a huge array of electronics inside.

16 channels of 16 bit ADC for Linear Movement, Cyclic Pressure, Reference Manometer and Temperature
2 channels of DAC for plenium vane servo control and also a VSD drive speed control
8 digital channels with interlocking relays for safety and start on the VSD and also driving a Air operated solenoid to control cyclic pressure testing and LED status indicators onthe front panel.
1 Strain Gauge Signal conditioner and 2 analog voltage isolating modules complete the unit.
3 power supplies:-- a 24 VAC, 9VDC swithced mode and a 5 VDC linear.

The products used in building the SWS Windows Tester are from MasTec's suppliers -- MCC, NI, Opto 22, Dataforth, Penny & Giles, Power Tech, Omega.

It all runs off a dual core PC with XP and interfacing is USB.

LabVIEW software runs in many complex forms to achieve a Tearc registered result for the tester.

Sample rates on the ADC are 300 samples/second in real time to a strip chart for observation and logging.

It now does NZ and Australian Window Testing Certified Protocols.
