Happy New Year 2009,
I hope it has all gone well for everyone this holiday season, in the 28 countries this newsletter is sent to.
MasTec is celebrating its 20th year of business.
MasTec is still fundamentally the same company that started in 1989, a high tech distributor / tradehouse.
We will be running some specials to celebrate the success of 20 years also, see Specials in the newsletter.
It also looks like it is going to be a very busy year for MasTec, judging from the early contacts we have had in January.
It is a grand time to focus on what your business is about, as others are distracted by the Financial State!.
Get your running costs right is crucial at this time.
Time will heal this situation world wide and in the mean time we can busy ourselves in our chosen businesses and be innovative and intuitive.
All the best for 2009 from all the staff here at MasTec.

Rob Maskell -- Moving On This Year
The owner of MasTec Ltd, Rob Maskell is also celebrating 41 years of Professional Business work and has decided this is the year he will move on and pursue other interests in his life.
The MasTec Ltd is almost totally run by staff now, with Rob having slowly withdrawn from the day to day operation starting about 2 years ago.
He is still active in Smart Works Systems but will be withdrawing from this also this year.
A Short History --
Rob started electronics as a child and his first project he can remember (other than winding RF tuning coils on old cardboard toilet rolls and shellacing them with his brother Trevor when about 5), was using a small signal germanium diode and a Ferranti XB102 germanium point contact transistor to make a better Xtal set.
Progressing on from there, he worked on tube radios and TVs for many years, even rebuilding vintage radio sets from just after World War One.
Computer work started in 1968 on DEC PDP 8i, and S machines graduating to 8Es and PDP 11s and LSI IIs. He also worked with IBM 360, 370s, HP 2116 and 1000 minis (RTE) and after micros were introduced a great variety of models and technologies, 1802, 6502, 8080, Z80, 6800, 68000 etc etc.
He was involved in Bio Medical research from 1968 to 1986 in Canada at the Kinesiology Dept Simon Fraser Univertsity with collaboration with others at UBC and Waterloo Uni. During this time he became deeply involved with Atmospheric Gas Analysis and wrote papers on techniques and calculations for atmospheric gases, resolving some long standing historic issues to do with analysis of human performance using gas analysis to measure metabolic rates and cardiac outputs. He built the first full automated computerised VO2 Gas Anlaysis system at this time also.
After this time period, he spent the next 3.5 years in Europe helping to introduce and establish National Instruments in various countries. He became the leading proponent of LabVIEW Graphical Programming teaching several thousand people all over Europe, finally leaving Europe from the last post which was Milano Italy.
Returning to NZ in late 1989, he established MasTec Ltd and has run the company since then.
MasTec has broken technical ground in many areas over the years. Some firsts are :-
Graphical Programming, Virtual Instruments, Medical Teaching Tools, MAC and PC Colour Scanners, Low Cost UPSs, M2M Radio, Zigbee, Micro Core Modules, Graphical programming for FPGA and DSP Real Time systems, Light Based Encoders, Hot Swap Redundant UPSs, Ethernet & USB DAQ, IP Controlled Reboot Systems, High frame Rate & Res CMOS Cameras, Integrated Micro Wireless combos, PAC Distributed I/O systems and Low cost Universal Voltage AC LED Lighting, Drop in Wireless Networks etc etc.
MasTec has also trained 650 + New Zealand, Australia and Pacific Island programmers in LabVIEW, LabWindows and Measurement Studio.
MasTec has 10K+ UPS sites in NZ and hundreds of Integration projects.
MasTec will continue to make a large impression on the technical ability of Oceania in the coming years as it moves forward with its excellent staff of younger Sales Engineers.
