MasTec Alternativer Power Solutions

MasTec is involved in developing and marketing alternative power systems.

Many years back MasTec develped an off the grid small research and development centre for Alternative Power.

The completed systems continues to evelove and has of theyears consisted of several solar panels types and wind turbines, large storage batteries under trial and several types of inverters under trial.

Data acquistion, measuring and loggers are added to the system.

With the inclusion of a weather station in the measurement system, extra value data on system performance can be amassed.

In 2006, new low cost Asian deep discharge cells were added to the system and the charging characteristics and discharge times were monitored. These batteries are low impedance 6 volt units with a large cell area and take charge readily even when it is very low charge currents which can be typical of solar systems on cloudy days or low wind days when the turbine is making 10-20 watts.

In 2008 MasTec started testing lower cost Chinese made solar panels for performance, beside Australian or USA manufacturers and to date the results are as good or better than USA panels. These panels are mono crystaline and not polycrystaline or amorphous like the Australian or USA panels.

The monos do extremely well in bright sunshine.

As a note -- MasTec has been using Asian SLA batteries in some UPSs nsince 2003 and they are proving to be as good as any other brands we have, including some that are twice the cost, so we feel the same will be true for these deep cycle wet batteries.

The overall focus for MasTec is on practical, reliable, easy to install products that will serve well.

Wind Turbine Generator

Three Phase Alternator WInd Turbines

Two Models:-

NOTE: All wind generator models are supplied without mounting tower and associated mounting hardware.

These three phase units are excellent for long cable runs as a standard 10 amp three wire extension cable can be used with the 200 watt and a 15 amp cable for the 500 watt unit. This saves a lot of money and also makes battery regulation excellent as the controller is right at the battery bank.

Model 1 :-- 200 watts with a max of 300 watts

Consists of a controller box, turbine fiber glass blades, 3 phase magnet alternator.

MasTec's experience with this model has found they are extremely noisey at high winds. To reduce the noise we reshaped the blades and also shortened them slightly reducing thr noise considerably. The furling system on these turbines is not very good and requires the tail to be lubricated and and remain in a free swing state always. Also we found by adding three rubber shock absorbers on the tail improved the pwerformance considerably. The are long life and rugged. Our unit has been through several storms over 100km and with the modifiations we made it generated at those speeds also while furleing on and off on the gusts..

Specs

Starts in 3 metres/sec (approx 12km/hr - 7mph)
Some power as low as 2.5- 3 metres/sec once moving- power is a cube function of wind speed
200 watts at wind speeds as low as 8 metres per second (approx 30km/hr - 18mph)
300W at higher wind velocities
Furling starts at wind speeds of >13meters/sec (approx 50km/hr - 30mph)
Full furling at wind speeds of >18meters/sec (approx 65km/hr - 40mph)
The unit will withstand wind speeds of 40m/sec (approx145km/hr - 90mph).

All mechanical components are either cast steel or aluminium.

The 62kg alternator power head unit features a 3 phase permanent magnet alternator that has a locked internal windings and rotating manets, with a slip ring out of the Yaw bearings for the three phase AC cables.

The 2.1 meter diameter fiberglass 3 blade rotor is efficient at low speeds allowing more power to be generated than higher spec, higher priced turbines. The power curve of this turbine is at lower wind speeds which will deliver more power on average. The blades are not high tech and are square ended but because of their large diameter, compensate for any losses due to this lack of detail. However the cost is kept low using this low tech approach.

Two Models

  • nominal 12VDC, max 16VDC 16.66 Amps which will charge a 12V battery bank
  • nominal 24VDC, max 28VDC 8.33 Amps which will charge a 24V battery bank

This unit will charge a battery bank until full and then defer power to an internal heating element.

The unit is made in China for remote applications and is rugged.

Model 2 :-- 500 watts with a max of 650 watts

500W 24VDC Wind Turbine

Always at the forefront of alternative energy technology, we’re pleased to offer this new range of wind turbine generators. As well as the 200W model above, we now a big 500W unit for those who want to generate some serious power.

The 200W and 500W units share the same operational and design features, with their 3-phase permanent magnet alternator, external regulator box and simple flat style blades. These two models are perfect for those with a lot of space between themselves and the neighbours, or where a long cable run is needed from the generator head to the battery bank. The 500W unit also features slip rings on the generator head to avoid cable breakages.

Forshan's Large Range of Windmills

Forshan is a primary turbine maker in China with affilation to German technology.

Their modesl extend from tiny 200 to 100KWatt units.

For example, the 100KW model has a 32 meter diameter blades and is a monster.

These are used extensively in China and other parts of Asia.

To erect these machines requires great skill and engineering unless you use the pateneted erection system, see the phot below. One person can raise these units and bring them down again for service.

I see the range of Turbines being used in everyting from Small Alternative Power systems to small commercial users who want to build a farm and make some money off them.

We can supply grid synchronised alternators also for all models.

Their Installation Manual will be of interest it has the Model Matrix also pdf
